RARE & INTERESTING E. N. WELCH (Forrestville, CT) AESTHETIC MOVEMENT"L'IMPERIAL" MODEL CAST BRASS SHELF ALARM CLOCK
This noteworthy timepiece is from my personal collection of clocks curated since 1972.Commencing with apprenticeship to a European master clock and watchmaker through high school graduation, freshmen year of college and remainder of the 1970s, I sensitively restored clocks of all types; opening service and sales showrooms in the western suburbs of Chicago. After a 35 year "sabbatical" pursuing an appraisal career, I've returned to the venerable trade. In over half a century viewing and identifying countless thousands of clocks, I'll readily admit this one threw me. Paper dial with unusual Roman numerals, case and rear cover are unmarked. Only this morning examined the (also unmarked) movement with oversize balance wheel.
An member was kind enough to identify this timepiece as the "L'Imperial" model by E.N. Welch Manufacturing Company. With 30-hour lever movement, an identical clock case is depicted on page 101 of the Tran Duy Ly book Welch Clocks (second edition 2013).
In addition to unique eye-catching style, the shelf clock is notable for "untouched original" condition. Ticking away with functional alarm - tho I'd not rely on timekeeping for other than novelty purposes. Please review descriptive information and study the photographs for details. I'm available to answer any and all questions / concerns.
Thanks!
