FOR W. C. KILLGALLON\'S 80TH BIRTHDAY

Available for purchase is an EXTREMELY RARE porcelain sculpture made by the artisans at Boehm Studios. This special production piece depicts a white rose and is similar to their \"Peace Rose\". However, it\'s slightly different and appears to be unique. It was made to commemorate the 80th birthday of W. C. Killgallon on January 9, 1993. I\'m presuming they were made as table favors for invited guests.William Casley Killgallon (1913-2000) was the former president of the Ohio Art Company, an American toy manufacturing company based in Bryan, Ohio. Killgallon is perhaps best known for helping devise the name for the toy known as the Etch a Sketch. Killgallon and another executive coined the new name after they acquired the rights to the toy originally made in England as the DoodleMaster Magic Screen. Etch a Sketch was an instant hit in the early 1960s. Killgallon became president of Ohio Art in 1966 and retired in 1978. After retirement, he lived in Charlottesville, Virginia until his death in 2000.This special production white rose measures about 2 1/2\" tall and 4 3/4\" long. The underside of the base is marked with the horse head logo, the hand-painted number \"SP127\", and \"MADE IN U.S.A.\" It also has the hand-painted text \"W. C. Killgallon\'s 80th Birthday 1-9-93\". I purchased this flower sculpture (along with an identical piece) at a recent estate sale in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, not too far from Killgallon\'s home in Charlottesville. I suspect these flower sculptures once belonged to a couple who attended the birthday party.If you\'re not already familiar with Boehm Porcelain, it\'s an artisan studio that was founded by sculptor Edward and wife Helen Boehm in 1950. Today, it\'s recognized as one of the world’s foremost porcelain studios.
