ES-86A Sir Ernest William TittertonCMGFRSFAA(4March 1916– 8 February 1990) was a Britishnuclear physicist. A graduate of theUniversity of Birmingham,Titterton worked in a research position underMark Oliphant, who recruited him to work on radar fortheBritish Admiraltyduring the first part of theSecond World War. In 1943, he joined theManhattan Project'sLos Alamos Laboratory,where he helped develop the firstatomic bombs. He eventually became one of the laboratory'sgroup leaders. He participated in theOperation Crossroadsnucleartests at theBikini Atollin 1946,where he performed thecountdownfor both tests. With thepassage of theAtomic Energy Act of 1946,known as the McMahon Act, all British government employees had to leave. He wasthe last member of theBritishMissionto do so, in April 1947. Returning to England,Titterton joined theAtomicEnergy Research EstablishmentinHarwell, Oxfordshire,heading a group responsible for research withnuclear emulsionsandcloud chambers. He investigatedternary fission, a comparatively rare type of nuclear fissionin which the nucleus breaks into three pieces instead of two, and thephotodisintegrationoflight nuclei bygamma rays. He was also a consultant totheAtomicWeapons Research Establishment(AWRE) atAldermastonthat designed and developed Britain's firstnuclear weapons. In August 1950, Titterton accepted an offer from Oliphant tobecome the foundation Chair of Nuclear Physics at theAustralian NationalUniversity(ANU) inCanberra. Over the next thirty years, Titterton held highpositions on various science, defence and nuclear-related committees,institutes and councils in Australia. He helped build up the physics departmentat ANU through the acquisition of accelerators. As a member of the AtomicWeapons Tests Safety Committee (AWTSC), Titterton witnessed many of theBritish nuclear tests atMaralinga. His reputation was tarnished by theMcClelland RoyalCommissionin 1984 and 1985, which accused him of loyalty toBritain instead of Australia. He was a strong public advocate ofnuclear power in Australia,arguing that "nuclear power is the cheapest, cleanest and safest method ofpower production yet devised by man."
