RARE 1929 Vintage US Navy Shellback Certificate USS GLACIER AGB-4 BLANK and SIGNED W/SEAL.
Measures 20\" x 15\". Overall, this certificate is in excellent condition with no rips or tears. There is a bit of corner curling, a couple of very faint crease lines and some yellowing. Purchased at sale with a lot of other prints, I have owned this for about 15 years and it has been stored in a large red jacket portfolio in a dry environment.
The USS Glacier was commissioned in 1955, at that time the largest icebreaker in the free world. The Certificate is signed by its first Commanding Officer E.H. Maher during Operation Deep Freeze (1955-1956) and has the U.S. Navy Seal. Eugene H. Maher was the Commanding Officer on the ship\'s maiden voyage and was from Massachusetts. Recent google/wiki searches show his name as Mayer, however, research of a number of documents archived with the U.S. Navy reveal that this spelling is incorrect. In fact, Maher Island in Antartica was named after Commander Maher by the US-ACAN in 1955-56.
Probably the only one of its kind.
