A Soldier of theLegion
An Englishman\'s Adventures Under the French Flag in Algeria and Tonquin
By George Manington
OWNED by Spanish-American War Soldier Henry A.C. de Rubio
Published in1907byJohn Murray,London. First edition. Quite rare. All text in English. Hardbound inred cloth with gilt lettering and decoration,[xix] +380 pages, including a foldout map of \"Tonquin\" at the rear. The personal copy of one Henry A.C. De Rubio, with his bookplates pasted inside both inside and rear covers, and his signature (\"H.A.C. deRubio / Mombasa / East Africa / 1908\") on second blank endpaper. Looking online, he apparently served as a volunteer inthe Philippines during theSpanish American War (serving in 1899 as a First Lieutenant in Companies B and Dof the 201st Infantry Regiment), and his careerevidently later took him to Kenya, ashis signature in this book would attest.
Condition:A stunningly well preserved copy, very bright and attractive, with an interesting original ownership association. Book is structurally sound with hinges intact and solid, though you will obviouslywant to handle this book with some care. Very fresh and clean, no foxing. The delicate tissue guard between the frontispiece and title page is intact and unwrinkled. And, very remarkably, the folding map of Tonkin (\"Tonquin\") at the rear is in immaculate condition.
There is some odd offsetting of sorts to the first front and rear blank endpapers, but confined to these pages only. Top edge isgilt and still mostly bright, only slightly dulled. De Rubio\'s personal bookplates (identical) are affixed to both the front and rear inside covers, and hand-numbered 1149. On the endpapers opposite the bookplates, thereare correspondinglighter patches within the previously mentioned offsetting - this is partially visible within the photos.
An exquisite copy of a truly rare book.
