RARE 1/6 PLATE TINTYPE OF 1800\'S CLOTHING DRYER - ID\'ED - POSSIBLE PATENT PHOTO:
$750.00

RARE 1/6 PLATE TINTYPE OF 1800\'S CLOTHING DRYER - ID\'ED - POSSIBLE PATENT PHOTO- IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ ENTIRE LISTING. When I purchased this sixth plate tintype out of an estate sale, I only thought I had bought a photograph of a simple chair. However, once I received the image, I realized the image had far greater significance. When I turned the image over for the first time I found a typed identification on the back which read, \"Hila Ellen Hinote\'s Weaving Loom.\" Initially I was elated, but then realized after careful study this object was in fact, NOT a weaving loom as mentioned in the notation, but an early American invention for wringing out wet clothing and household linens. This chair shaped clothing dryer of simple construction even appears to be a folding model, allowing the devise to be more easily stored within the home. You can clearly see how garments would travel through the wooden gears when you cranked the single handle seen on the near side of the devise. Note, where the chair would normally have the seat, the space was left open. I believe this area was where a person could insert a bucket and catch any residual water. Any water squeezed out of their wet items would help to expedite the drying time of the laundry. There appears to be a folded table cloth inserted inside the gears to help demonstrate how this invention was intended to be utilized. If you look at my cropped scan, you can also make out there is some writing on the back leg, running vertically at the top. My guess is this could be the manufacturers name, patent number, etc.. After some quick research on a an ancestral website I found several paragraphs which talk about how Hila Ellen Hinote and her husband, who traveled and lived all over the U.S., had five children, wound up in Walla Walla, Washington. The website mentions that Hila lost the use of one of her arms later in life.
Ironically, I purchased this image from an estate sale out of Walla Walla and therefore, I must presume this tintype actually came from one of her relatives, who had incorrectly labeled the item pictured as her weaving loom. It is funny how time can change the facts, right? What makes this tintype so rare? Well, first of all, have you ever seen a tintype photo of a 19th Century clothing dryer before? I didn\'t think so... Tintypes containing still life images of individual objects- especially inventions, gadgets or patent items are some of the rarest 19th Century images to acquire. What I find amazing is why and how Hila decided bring this clothing dryer to be photographed at her local photographers studio in the first place? Was it because Hila or her husband designed and patented this invention? Was this contraption her absolute favorite or prized possession? Was the tintype given to her prior to her receiving a similar devise as a Birthday or Christmas present? Was it because she was unable to use one of her arms, this devise made her life much easier? Although we may never know why Hila had this invention photographed, I guaranty you will be offerding on what is most likely the only tintype image of a clothing dryer from the 1800\'s ever captured on an iron sixth plate. All the tintypes I have seen offered containing similar American inventions have exceeded $1000.00 mark at sale. I have set my opening offer accordingly. The image won\'t do your laundry, but it will make for one heck of an investment and a conversation piece to add to your 19th Century photography collection. Good luck to all the serious collectors of American tintypes and patent image collectors.CONDITION: Please view my detailed scans for the actual condition. Please remember, tintypes are one of a kind photographic images. The image has typical surface wear for being over a 100 years old. The plate contains rare subject matter, has super sharpness and detail, nice lighting, great contrast and tonal range. The label on the back is how I recently purchased the item and I will leave it to the discretion of the next owner if they care to remove this taped label.
