VERY SCARCE, “Philippine Scouts” U.S. Army COMMISSION document SIGNED by U.S. PRESIDENT William Howard Taft. Document is dated January 16th 1911, appointing Joseph W. del Alamo a Second Lieutenant in the PHILIPPINE SCOUTS. The document is also SIGNED along the bottom by the Secretary of War (Jacob McGavock Dickinson), and there is a blue paper War Department seal in the lower left corner of the document.
PHILIPPINE SCOUTS were a military organization within the United States Army, formed in 1901 and which served until the end of World War II. Many Filipinos and others of Spanish descent were enlisted in the Scouts and assigned to the U.S. Army Philippine Department. These troops were typically under the command of American officers, but some Filipinos received commissions from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
CONDITION: document measures about 20 5/8 x 16 inches in size and is in EXCELLENT overall condition. The blue “War Office” seal is fully intact and crisp. The document has some minor handling wear and light toning, but NO folds. There is also one tiny edge tear, along the right border, about 1/8 inch in length (see scans).
