M1858 French Infantry Shako as Worn During the Civil War by the New York Excelsior Brigade, and several US Chasseur Regiments. Very nice overall, sound untouched condition with all original fittings including side vents, front plate and wool pom pom. No cockade or side buttons and no sign that they were ever present. Black leather body is in excellent sound condition. Tarred black leather trim with some crazing but no flaking. Tarred black leather chinstrap, with japanned adjusting buckle, about mint. Interior with 3 1/2" black Moroccan leather sweat band, which is complete with just one tear and no loss. Tarred black leather visor with a tear . Black painted underside with embossed markings " H" in the center. Very nice example of this Civil War shako which accompanied the 10,000 chasseur uniforms as purchased and issued by the US government during the war.GREAT ORIGINAL CONDITION, NEEDS ITS BRIM REPAIRED, BUT ALL OTHER IN GREAT CONDITION
