ORiGiNAL WiLLiAM ALLEN ROGERS THEODORE ROOSEVELT POLiTICAL CARTOON W.A Rogers:
$1595.00

Hi & thanks for the interest. We have here a unique ONE of a KIND,Original political cartoon of Theodore Roosevelt by William Allen Rogersaka W.A. Rogers. This delightfuldrawing depicts, THEODORE ROOSEVELT as The Great White Hunter, \"GOOD HUNTING\", is its title. This an original Pen & Inkdrawing, circaEarly 1909This is a drawing of President Theodore Roosevelt carrying a RHINOCEROS on his shoulders as a LADY news photographer shoots a photo of this amazing and funny, feat of strength, while off to the side, a Black African porter tries to carry, Teddy\'s 3 rifles & looks on in amazement. This is a great piece with, Teddy as a robust & rugged outdoor\'s man and hunter. He is even wearing his Rough Rider uniform. Rogers played around with three titles for this, as seen on the paper & crossed out titles as he narrowed down the title options. The possible titles were: \" Good Bye. Good Hunting! & Good Luck! \", as only \"Good Hunting!\" is not crossed out, with a blue pencil, we suspect that is title, although all three titles, running together would be a great title. These titles leads us to believe this was used around the time Teddy was getting ready to leave the White House, in March 1909 and begin his 11 month hunting Safari in Africa. What a great, send off piece, from his friend, William! This is a wonderful cartoon, perfect for when Howard Taft was coming into the Presidency and the U.S. was saying Good Bye & Good Luck to their beloved Teddy. This may also have been a gift to Teddy directly. I do not know if it was published but Rogers and he were friends. Rogers was very well known and worked for decades with the Washington Post and it may havebeen published there.
The matted image is about 17\" x 11\", paper size 20\" x 13.5\'\'. This is in it\'s original 21\" x 15\" vintage frame, behind glass.
W.A. Rogers, [1854-1931]is aVERY WELL known illustrator / cartoonist of political humor as well as an artist working for newspapers, like \"The Washington Post\" and \"The New York Herald\", magazines, like \"Harper\'s Weekly\" & \'\'Life\" and publications produced by Scribner\'s Publishing. Seldom do you see or find originals by him dealing with T.R..The Library of Congress / National Archives has about 380 drawings by Rogers but few with Teddy and I do not know how many are original drawings. From time to time one can find ORIGINAL, William Rogers works, but having Teddy as the subject of his drawing as, \"The Great White Hunter\", is extremely rare, and unique. This is Historical and a FUNNY ONE to look at. sale records for his original works have pushed $6,000. Minor illustration, like illustrations for novels don\'t have a lot of value. Political cartoons is where the value is. I don\'t know the subject matter of the $6,000 drawing that was sold at sale, but it probably doesn\'t get much better than this one, other than Teddy with his BIG STICK or with his Teddy Bear. This is in OUTSTANDING CONDITION, all original, no moisture damage, no foxing, no tears or rips, no insect damage, no fading, no folds, no thins and no repairs. The paper shows a tiny bit of age which is normal and to be expected for something about 108 yrs old. The paper is not brittle. The coloration is even with no sunlight damage & it\'s from a SMOKE FREE & PET FREE ENVIRONMENT. It\'s FULLY & CORRECTLY signed, W.A. ROGERS on the lower right corner, as shown.
