The Imperial Austrian Order of Franz Joseph (German: Kaiserlich-Österreichischer Franz-Joseph-Orden) was founded by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria on December 2, 1849, on the first anniversary of his accession to the imperial throne.
The badge of the order is an equilateral gold cross of red enamel with narrow, widening ends, superimposed on a two-headed Austrian eagle in black enamel with gold. The central medallion of the cross in white enamel bears the gold letters “FJ”. The medallion is framed by a wide gold ring. The eagle's head is held in its beaks by a slightly sagging golden chain, which is attached at its ends to the horizontal arms of the cross. An openwork gold inscription with the motto "VIRIBUS UNITIS" is superimposed on the lower part of the cross in a semicircle. On the reverse of the medallion is the date "1849" - the year the order was founded. The cross is crowned with a golden imperial crown.Exclusive handmade.
