\"It was a coup de poker - it was all a bluff to make Telekom work today. It worked perfect for us,\" joked a happy Lance Armstrong in the post-race press conference, discussing his winning tactics in a superb ride in today\'s 209 km Stage 10 of the 2001 Tour De France from Aix-Les-Bains to L\'Alpe d\'Huez. \"We didn\'t know that Telekom was going to ride hard tempo almost from the beginning of the stage. So the plan (to bluff) was born on the road, since we know that they (the other teams) are all watching on TV anyway - so we decided to bluff. And my radio didn\'t work; I could hardly hear Johan all day.\"

Before he launched his race winning attack at the foot of l\'Alpe d\'Huez, Lance just didn\'t look at ease as he usually does; he was out of the saddle often and was not riding in his usual position near the front of the group. On the Col du Glandon, USPS team director Johan Bruyneel gave an interview to Thierry Blanco of French TV where he said - \"Lance\'s radio doesn\'t work - plus the team isn\'t super today so it\'s better to have Lance sit back.\" Not. It was a classic fake-out by Lance and it worked.

Meanwhile up front, the Team Deutsche Telekom men were hammering like the hounds of hell all day, trying to put the hurt on Lance and the other contenders. In the end, they ended up putting the hurt on themselves and coming away with 2nd on the stage with Ullrich, who showed his strength on the final ascent where he definitively dropped Moreau and Beloki. Francois Simon hung on to finish a respectable 29th on the stage, 10\'20\" behind Armstrong to take the Maillot Jaune from Stuart O\'Grady. Ironically, his brother Pascal lost the Maillot Jaune at l\'Alpe d\'Huez 18 years ago to Laurent Fignon. O\'Grady finished Stage 10 in a group of 18 at 32\'05\" and moved to 3rd on the overall, 8\'00 ahead of his rival for the Maillot Vert.

Danger man Kivilev moved up from 4th to 2nd, only 11\'54\" behind the Maillot Jaune. Kivilev was 12th today, 4\'39\" behind Armstrong, 5\'41\" ahead of Simon. This puts the Kazakh on track to take the Maillot Jaune next weekend in the Pyrenees. \"Kivilev is a damn good climber,\" said Armstrong after Stage 10. \"We might have made a very big mistake the other day (on Stage 8). \"(The Maillot Jaune) is a heavy jersey - I respect Kivilev a lot; I tried to get him on our team last year but it didn\'t work out.\"

Just behind the top three on GC, all the favourites are within 5\'00 of each other, with Armstrong 4th, Beloki 5th, Moreau 6th and Ullrich 7th. Problem is that for now, Kivilev still has more than an 8 minute lead on Lance, Joseba, Christophe and Jan.

The first day of \"real\" racing started lakeside this morning in Aix-les-Bains under sunny skies. The first attack that stuck turned out to be the key attack of the day, as Laurent Roux (Jean Delatour), Eladio Jimenez (iBanesto.com) and Toni Tauler (Kelme-Costa Blanca) got away and by the time they reached the first KOM, the trio had a 12\' lead. Behind Telekom started to ride hard tempo that would explode the peloton and as the as the main group hit the base of the Col de la Madeleine, the break had 13\'35.

The 45 strong Telekom-led peloton began to gain ground on the break while the second group, containing O\'Grady was already 2\' behind and Simon became Maillot Jaune virtuel.

Telekom continued their infernal pace, while Lance\'s poker game began. Up and over the Madeleine was no cakewalk, as Telekom had Kevin Livingston and Andreas Klöden pounding away on the front while rider after rider went out the back, including Lance\'s ailing faithful lieutenant Tyler Hamilton, who finished in the autobus group today, 40\' behind.

Same show up the next, harder climb of the Glandon; Telekom hammers, Lance bluffs. Armstrong\'s friend Robin Williams was visiting Le Tour today, riding with big boss Patrick Clerc and he must have been giving Lance acting lessons as the American did look ill at ease. But it was all for show. The break was at 7\', but Roux had dumped Jimenez and was going it alone on the road to l\'Alpe d\'Huez.

Just near the top after a massive pull, Livingston seemed to crack and slid back to his team car, but he made it over the top of the Glandon and rejoined on the descent. By the time the front group hit the flats at the base of the Glandon, there were 3 Telekoms on the front with Jan Ullrich on their wheel riding 50 km/h in pursuit of the failing Roux and Jimenez.

The final attack

As he made the left turn from Bourg d\'Oisans to begin the mythical 13.9 km ascent to l\'Alpe, Roux was struggling to keep his 6\'10\" lead. His fatigue was no bluff; pain and suffering were etched in stark relief on his face as Roux tried to keep a good tempo in front of the approaching onslaught. As the Telekom train hit the bottom behind Roux, there were a few attacks but as the grade steepened, Armstrong\'s teammate Jose Luis Rubiera accelerated, with The defending champion on his wheel. While Telekom had pounded their hearts out trying to put the hurt on Armstrong, the Texas gamblin\' man had been bluffing. Now he was playing for keeps.

Rubiera\'s move took everybody by surprise except Lance. They gapped the rest of the now decimated front group and after 2 km, Rubiera pulled off. Lance was in the lead; he looked over his shoulder, saw Ullrich there and attacked hard. In a moment, the American had gapped Ullrich and began his solo assault towards victory at l\'Alpe d\'Huez. Like an inexorable Catherine wheel, Armstrong spun his 39x24 as Ullrich pounded away behind in a huge gear, eventually dropping his chase companions Beloki and Moreau.

Armstrong wins

The rest is history. Lance caught and passed the valiant Roux, who held on for 7th, and went on to victory. His time up l\'Alpe d\'Huez was 38\'01\", only 26\" short of Marco Pantani\'s record of 37\'35\" in 1995. The bluff worked and not only did Armstrong win the most prestigious stage of this year\'s Tour De France, his high risk/high reward strategy dealt a telling blow to the collective psyches of Ullrich, Beloki, Moreau and Kivilev.
