New & Unsmoked Ser Jacopo Picta Magritte 17 (S2) Sandblast Sterling Bird Band
Giancarlo Guidi, an artist and student of art, created four "Picta" series of pipes which paid homage to Vincent van Gogh, RenĂ© Magritte, Pablo Picasso and Joan MirĂ³. This pipe is number 17 in a series of 20 diverse shapes which make up the "Picta Magritte" collection which was Giancarlo's second Picta series. The pipes are the physical reality of what Giancarlo sees, or believes the artist meant for us to see in their various paintings or drawings which feature pipes to a lesser or greater extent. One sees this in the Magritte series where the 01 pipe is little more than a daub of paint on the canvas and the number 10 which only features a pipe with the claim written in French that it isn't a pipe! Do you believe your lyin' eyes?
The pipe has a very strong straight grain sandblast. Its reverse curving stem gives it the look of a Hawkbill as well. It is sandblasted throughout, though there are nomenclature panels on either side of the shank, and a portiion of the flat bottom has been left smooth as well. As mentioned, the sandblasting is extremely strong and radiates up the side walls and down the shank.Grain you can feel! The pipe is dressed with an elegant Magritte inspired (of course) ornate sterling silver band. The pipe will come with a Magritte booklet showcasing all the pieces of the Magritte Picta collection.
The S2 designation indicates it is a sandblast (sabbiata) and is in the middle range of Ser Jacopo's color range. Their sandblasts can be black, which can have an S designation but just as often there is no S stamp at all/, Then there's the S1 which is often a dark brown with darker highlights and then the S2 such as the example here and finally the S3 which is unstained and is also known as Spongia. The Spongia stamp is a fairly recent addition. During the first 20 years or so, the unfinished sandblasts were stamped S3, and are quite small in number compared to the S/S1/S2 models
