QUARTERSCOPE COIN OPERATED STEREO VIEWER

This Quartoscope viewer has been in my personal cameracollection for nearly 40 years. I purchased it ca. 1980 from a collector of coin operated machines. I wanted itbecause of my collection of stereo photography. I was told at the time that ithad been professionally refinished in the Indiana/Chicago area prior to hispurchase. The unit has been a conversation piece in my home as it will be inyours. In addition to being a nice piece of photographica, it should alsoappeal to stereo-view (risqué) enthusiast, coin-operated machine devotees andthose interested in mechanical design. There are several YouTube videosavailable and I recommend that you view one this device in action.

This viewer contains 48 “risqué” views. These 1920’s slides arevery mild by today’s standards. More explicit images (both antique and modernreproductions) are readily available through . I am including 26 extraslides that can be switched out with those already mounted on the machinesconveyor belt. This unit is in perfect operational condition and is a stunningdisplay piece.

In use the viewer drops a nickel in the coin slot, pulls theactivating lever on the right and watches as 12 views flip up in sequence forabout 3 seconds before being replaced with the next slide. The last slide shownis actually the 1st slide of the next sequence and so on. Itrequires 4-coin insertions to see the entire series. This is where the “Quarter”in the machines name comes from. You see one quarter of the series at a time. These were popular in Penny Arcades a hundred or more years ago.

The Quartoscope was produced by the Mills Novelty Co. from in1897 through the 1920’s. TheInternational Arcade Museum notes that there were 671 of these machinesreleased.

My attached photos will give you a good idea of the qualityof this specific unit.

I am listing this unit for local pick up or continental USshipping via UPS Freight. My measurements show 58” high (48.5” with legsremoved), 22” wide and 18-1/2” deep. I’m guessing at 125lbs. My local officeestimates under $400 for packing and shipping. Please check on your shipping needs prior to offerding.
