Description
This is a ceramic large serving bowl in the Talavera tradition of Mexican pottery by Cayetano Corona, from Tiaxcala, Mexico. It features a center cobalt blue medallion with light blue flowers and strokework. The top rim edge is cobalt blue. The piece measures 13 1/3\" across and 6\" deep.
It is signed, Talavera La Corona, Tiax. Mex.
It is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. Expect imperfections in the painting, with skip marks, fingerprints and smudges. All pieces are lovingly made by hand so they can also have a slight warp and be uneven. That is part of their charm.
About the Artist
At the age of 13, Cayetano Corona set out to learn the craft of Talavera. He went to the city of Puebla and went to work for the famed Uriarte family. After many years of mastering his craft, Cayetano decided to go off on his own and opened his factory in the neighboring state of Tlaxcala. His work is highly respected and he is now one of Mexico’s Great Masters of Folk Art. While today, many of the Talavera factories in Puebla are mass producing, Cayetano insists on following the timeworn technique of producing Talavera and aims to preserve this traditional craft.
