This issue is dated less than two weeks after the victory of Begin\'s Likud party in Israel\'s elections, a major turning point in the nation\'s history. Accompanied by an unsigned sheet of stationery and a postmark from the Prime Minister\'s office, both stapled to the cover.

May 30, 1977 over of Time magazine with illustration of Begin and Israeli map. Captioned: \"Menachem Begin/ISRAEL/TROUBLE IN THE/PROMISED LAND\". Lightly toned and creased. Caption is partially covered by address label. Cover was torn neatly from magazine on left. Three light tears on right edge. Lightly chipped at top edge. Lightly toned and creased, otherwise in fine condition. 3) Unsigned Israeli postmark from July 23, 1978. Partial English caption: \"Prime Minster\'s Office/Jerusalem-Israel\". With blue-and-white Hebrew air mail label affixed. Lightly toned and creased. Normal postal stamps. Irregular edges. Otherwise in fine condition. Begin\'s center-right party Likud, which he had led since its beginnings in 1973, won a major victory in Israel\'s Knesset in the May 17, 1977 elections. It was the first time that the left wing had lost an election and marked a dramatic shift in Israeli politics and history. Begin (1913-1992, born in Brest-Litovsk, Russia, now Belarus) reached British Palestine in 1943 to participate in the struggle for an independent state of Israel. He served in the Knesset from its first session. In 1973, the Likud Party was formed and Begin became its leader. When Likud won the elections in 1977, he became Prime Minister. Begin and Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat received the Nobel Peace Prize for the peace treaty they signed in 1978, after much of the Sinai was returned to Egypt. In June 1981, Begin asked the Cabinet to approve the bombing of the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak. On Shavuot, Israeli planes flew below radar detection through Arab air space and destroyed the facility, which Israel later claimed had been primed for a start-up. In 1982, Begin authorized the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. In failing health and following the death of his wife, Aliza, Begin stepped down in September 1983.See more material from these signers:PRIME MINISTER MENACHEM BEGIN (ISRAEL) See more listings in our FORIEGN LEADERS (811) category.
