The story of Mary child of Milan:
In the years between 1720 and 1730, a Franciscan nun from Todi (Sister Chiara Isabella Fornari) created out of personal devotion some graceful wax simulacra of a newborn Mary wrapped in swaddling clothes. One of these effigies was donated to the Capuchin nuns of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Milan in 1739. The nuns propagated the devotion, which immediately found particularly fertile ground in the Ambrosian context.
The years from 1782 to 1842 mark the suppression, decreed first by Emperor Joseph II and then by Napoleon, of the various religious congregations. The simulacrum was brought by some Capuchin nuns to the Augustinian convent, then by the Lateran Canonesses; it will then be entrusted to the parish priest Don Luigi Bosisio, so that he can pass it on to a religious institute that can keep its devotion alive.
Finally the statuette landed in the general house of the Sisters of Charity of Lovere, a religious congregation founded in 1832 by Bartolomea Capitanio, where it became very popular, so much so that from then until today the nuns of this congregation are popularly called "of Maria Bambina".
In 1884, we read: "...it was seven o'clock on 9 September 1884... The mother went to the infirmary to visit the sick and, taking the holy image, went from bed to bed handing it to the sick nuns so that I kiss him. He reaches the postulant Giulia Macario, who has been very ill for several days. She tries to get closer to the Celestial Child, with affectionate words asking for healing. Immediately a mysterious tremor is felt throughout her body. 'I am healed!', she exclaims. Yes get up and walk." Since then, 'miracle day' has been celebrated on 9 September every year.
Popular devotion spreads following the numerous graces obtained.
In 1904, the then superior general, Sister Angela Ghezzi, asked and obtained permission from the Holy See to crown the miraculous simulacrum. The ceremony takes place on May 31st of the same year: Card. Ferrari, assisted by other bishops, places a gold diadem on the small effigy. The gesture is interpreted by many, and in particular by the religious, as a response from the Virgin to the prayer that, some time before, the young founder Bartolomea Capitanio had addressed to Mary, inviting her to "raise her tender hand from the cradle" and to bless everyone .
On November 21, 1942, in the midst of the war, on the day of the centenary of the entrance of the simulacrum into the institute, Pope Pius XII exhorted the nuns to "implore from the Celestial Child the return of that peace in the expectation of which the whole world bleeds and moans" (Vatican, 13 November 1942). The situation, however, gets worse: war claims victims and causes pain, desperation and destruction. Milan, like many other large cities, becomes a place of reprisals and the target of numerous bombings. There is fear for the fate of the simulacrum. In February 1943 he was transported to Maggianico di Lecco.
With the reconstruction of the house that was hit during the bombings, the simulacrum returns to Milan in a temporary location. On 5 October 1951 the first stone of the new sanctuary was laid, which will be consecrated on 20 and 21 November 1953 by Card. Ildefonso Schuster, archbishop of Milan.
In the week from 8 to 15 September 1984 the centenary of the first miracle was celebrated and on the following 4 November Pope John Paul II, present in Milan for the conclusion of the celebrations in honor of Saint Charles Borromeo, visited the sanctuary, entrusting to the institute "that delivery" that comes from his heart: "There is a chapter in Marian spirituality that seems especially open to your contemplation: Child Mary. A little-known mystery. I think that you have a great task: to deepen this mystery." Since that day, in front of the small image of Mary, a lamp "pro pontifice nostri Joanne Paulo" has burned. The pause for love and prayer in the sanctuary was a new, very sweet grace from Mary for all the nuns.
