Original World War I

U.S. Army Issue

M-1916(?) Standard Dress Wool Uniform Coat

& Dress Visor Hat

with Original Brass Engineer Collar Tabs & Buttons

Roughly Size36 Regular - Sold As-Is

Don\'t Miss This One...!!

A very hard-to-find classic from WWI. This is an estate item from a USMC veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam. This must have been his father\'s or grandfather\'s WWI uniform coat and visor hat. Since he was a US Marine and collected no other militaria (other than his own USMC items) there is no other reason for him to have kept this stuff - unless it was family.

The wool melton-like material of the jacket/coat is generally in very well preserved condition. There are less than a handful of moth marks/nips.. all very small and only one really shows from 4 feet away. The coat displays fantastically.

The hat was made in Philadelphia, Pa. by Jacob Reed\'s Sons. I do not know if the uniform was made there as well. It is otherwise unmarked as to maker. The buttons are made by Horstmann also of Philadelphia ... The engineer and \"U.S.\" round brass collar tabs have a nice aged patina on the front side. They are unmarked and well tarnished on the back side having been removed for the first time in many decades (if ever since the war) by me for the photos. When I unbuttoned the right chest pocket I was surprised to find a 1919 dated stamped meta, blue surround red cross pin folded over the edge (photo )..... Because the Great War didn\'t end until late morning on November 11th, 1918 (the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.....), many of the doughboys didn\'t get home until 1919 because the North Atlantic is a treacherous crossing in winter and they only could travel by boat.

The hat has a name and serial (service) number inked(?) in it. The buttons on it are marked \"ad astra per aspera\" and the letters KNC or KNG. The leather chin strap is in Very Fine condition, especially for being 100 years old.... as is the hat really. The leather sweatband is still flexible and in Fine+ to near Very Fine condition with no stitching out of place. There is no size marking that I could see or find. These uniform jacket/coats are very generously sized (see dimensions).

This is a great and rare find that has seen very good care and no abuse. It would be very hard to upgrade this WWI uniform coat & hat. They are museum grad..!! There is no specific contract date and the manufacturer is unknown.

Note: There areno insignia \"ghosts\" and no major flaws. The coat does need to be gone over with a steam iron as it has wrinkles from being stored for many years in a trunk. The coat is generally in Fine+ to Very Fine condition and has few, if any flaws or issues, and no rips or tears in the shell. There is less than a single handful of moth nips/grazes that I could find.....The lining isalso in Fine+ to Very Fine condition. All buttons are present and in Excellent condition. (see last photo) otherwise I would have rated the lining as Excellent!. This overcoat is being sold strictly as-is.

There are 12 photos to explicitly show the condition that is described above. I have many more photos than I could post..!! Please make photo requests/ask questions well before the end of the sale. Thisjacket & hat grouping are not reproductions, were made in the USAand are absolutely original to the period.
