Large Petrified Wood Log Self standing
The log is self standing, but looks good laying down as well. This would look great indoors or out in the garden. Fantastic external bark structure on this piece and growth rings are observed! The piece is between 65 - 250 million years old.

Petrified wood is the name given to wood that has been turned into stone (fossilized) through the process of permineralization. It occurs when a tree is buried under sediment or ash, and is cut off from oxygen which stops decay from occurring. Water will then move through the ground and into the tree, depositing minerals that replace the original plant matter. There\'s a wide variety of colors that can occur in petrified wood, and quartz is commonly found. Druzy formations occur when groundwater carries dissolved silica into the porous area of a rock. Rapid cooling then occurs, which creates a bunch of wee little crystals all over the rock on top of previously deposited minerals. All of the organic matter becomes replaced by minerals, while much of the original structure such as tree rings in retained. The color is due to the different minerals that replace the original wood structure, for examples iron creates reds and oranges.
