Circa 1890-1900
Late Transitional Period
Navajo Eye Dazzler Rug
Red-White-Blue
77” x 58”
Good Antique Condition
Description: I purchased this rug at an estate sale incentral Idaho in 1992. There were several rugs at that sale. The saleeer stated the deceased owner hadlived in Arizona until the 1950s and probably acquired her rugs during thattime. I never displayed it but have hadit in storage for the past 27 years – rolled in acid-free paper and kept in asmoke free, pet free home in a cool, dry and dark location.
I recentlypaid an appraiser for a verbal appraisal of this piece and this how hedescribed it: It is a late transition rug, circa 1890-1900. He verified it wasNavajo made, in an Eye Dazzler design. Heindicated it was made from hand spun wool.He said it was in good condition for its age except for the dye runs, whichcould be repaired by a conservator. He saidthe “W” embroidered in the upper left corner is not original and was likelyadded by a previous owner. He said the “W”did not signify anything about the rug maker, etc.
Thisrug is about 120 years old and has had at least 2 owners – myself and the ownerI purchased it from. I am not aware ofany other owners so I cannot give an entire history of the piece.
Condition: BeingSold AS IS. For a piece of this age, theappraiser said it was in good condition though it has some obvious issues whichI tried to capture in photographs. Thered splotches appear to be where the red ink ran – it must have gotten wet atsome point. There is one soiled spot andone very small hole I show in photos. The dark parallel lines I am not sure what caused those but it does notgo all the way through so perhaps something was set on the rug and transferred stainor rusted it? I think the rug wascleaned at some point because it is relatively clean and free of soil/dust, andit has no strong odors. I keep apet-free and smoke-free shop. Please lookcarefully at all photos and ask any clarifying questions beforepurchasing. Thanks so much for yourinterest.
