Price, who attended the Juilliard School of Music, made herBroadway debut inPorgy and Bessin 1952 and three years later became thefirst Black American singer to appear in a television production of an opera(Tosca). Price made herdebut with the San Francisco Opera in 1957, the year she first sangAïda.After debuting in Venice (1958), London (1958) and at La Scala (1960), she sang her first performance withNew York\'s Metropolitan Opera,which remained her primary base until her retirement in 1985. Price, who also made a number of recordings,married concert singer William Warfieldin 1952 (the couple separated in 1959 and divorced in 1972).
