TLS: \"L Olivier\", ¾p, 5¼x7. No place, but with original typed envelope postmarked Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1961 May 3. On stationery imprinted with his name to Miss Ella Cobb, Toledo, Ohio. In full: \"Thank you so much for your very nice letter. I am delighted to know that you enjoyed \'Becket\' and so grateful to you for having troubled to write and tell me so. I would of course, have been happy to autograph the biography for you. I hope you will enjoy your further visit to London as much as you did your last one. Every good wish to you.\" Olivier is likely referring to his appearance as Thomas Becket in the Broadway production of Becket, which played at the St. James Theatre from October 5, 1960-December 17, 1960 and at the Royale Theatre from December 19, 1960-March 25, 1961. On May 8, 1961, just five days after he signed this letter, Olivier would play another role, Henry II, in the play, which was presented at Broadway\'s Hudson Theatre through May 27, 1961. In 1961, Olivier also appeared in the feature film, The Power and The Glory. Laurence Olivier (1907-1989), Sir Laurence after 1947 and Lord Laurence after 1970, has been called the greatest Shakespearean interpreter and the greatest actor of his time. He won the 1948 Academy Award for Best Actor for Hamlet, which also won Best Picture (he was also the producer). Olivier was nominated for Oscars nine more times and was awarded a Special Oscar in 1979 for \"the full body of his work, the unique achievement of his entire career and his lifetime of contribution to the art of film.\" Slightly creased with mid-horizontal fold. Fine condition.
