Kalaga Burmese Tapestry Large Fine Quality Prince with Sacred White Elephant Ready to Hang
Since early 1980\'s, I have traveled to Southeast Asia buying Burmese Kalaga tapestries. At the time Kalaga making was just coming out of a long dormant period as a forgotten art. In the 1980\'s new Kalagas went from small and primitive pieces to large magnificent works of art. By the 1990\'s unfortunately world wide demand waned and making fine quality Kalagas disappeared from the market once again.
Some ten years ago nice pieces started to appear in the market place once more. With current demand on the rise, fine new Kalagas such as this one can be sparingly found once again. As a word of caution to the potential buyers, all but a sparse few Kalagas listed for sale are over 30 years old. If a listing suggests that this kalaga is \"antique\", one should ignore it and view the tapestry as a contemporary piece.
This fine quality Kalaga is a contemporary piece with an abundance of sewing of the threads, figures, sequins, and glass stones which is characteristic of a fine quality Burmese Kalaga tapestry. Including the silk border, the large Kalaga is 39 inches high by 54 inches wide a the a large impressive piece perfect size for hanging on most walls.
Teams of workers sew the tiny sequins, glass stones, and padded figures to the tapestry background. A large tapestry may take months to make. A very large 10 feet wide or wider may take over a year to complete.
The larger Kalagas have always related a story about famous folklore heroes, minor and major deities or royal life in the old Kingdom of Burma. Included in this ornate tapestry are folklore heroes and royal sacred white elephants.
The large center story piece shows a prince in a royal carriage pulled by a sacred white elephant from the palaces stables. Above the prince is an angel beseeching the prince to give up the trappings of a royal life and become a Buddhist monk. The royal prince would become Buddha.
On each side of the central story panel are two more Burmese folklore figures. One is a sacred white elephant and the other an angelic figure.
Ready to Hang, The Tapestry is Finished with A Thai Silk Border
After purchasing the tapestries, I have them finished with Thai silk borders with loops at the top for hanging from a pole or rod. No additional sewing work is required To hang, run a decorative rod threw the loops and mount this beauty on a wall.
Note: If you are thinking of purchasing a Kalaga without a border on it, the cost of the material and sewing the fabric to the tapestry can easily exceed the cost of the tapestry.
Condition:
This is a new Kalaga recently made in Burma. The tapestry is in excellent condition. Although Kalagas have a tendency to lose the glass stones and sequins glued and sewn to the tapestries, all of the glass stones and sequins on this Kalage appear to be present. The metal sequins are shiny but will age or darken with a patina overtime. The tapestry is in \"out of the box\" condition and is ready to be hung in your home for many decades to come.
