Manuscript DS: "Charles R" as "King of England Scotland France & Ireland", 1p, 8¾x3½. Our Court at Bruxeles, 1659 July 18. In Olde English. King Charles has appointed "Our trusty & welbeloved __________" as "Comissioners for Our County of __________ Giving you or the major part of you power to Leavy Souldiers Horse and Foot for the opposing or destroying those who are in Rebelion against Us And to appoint Colonels and all Interiore Officers to command the Souldiers we raised, And likewise to make choice og any person to be Comander in chief over them for any one particular designe...with those Forces to cause any Fort, Castle, Towne or City to be seized on for Us, and to fight, kil and destroy all who are in armes against us or Our Authority...." Neither the names of the Commissioners nor the county have been filled in. King Charles II was driven from England by Oliver Cromwell in 1651, following the campaign of the latter in Scotland during that year. He escaped to France, making his headquarters in that country. Various plots for the assassination of Cromwell failed, and in 1654, the Lord Protector, by negotiations with France, drove Charles into Germany. From there he was able to make a treaty with Spain in 1656, which allowed him to reside in Brussels. Cromwell's death in 1658 did not immediately alter Charles' position, and in September 1659, two months after the date of this document, he journeyed to Southern France in a futile attempt to unite French and Spanish crowns in an expedition against England. Charles II was again proclaimed King in 1660. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical fold between the "s" in Charles and the "R". 1½-inch diameter wax seal affixed at blank left margin (paper over seal touches text when unfolded). Lightly yellowed at some lines of text (all legible). Overall, fine condition for an almost 350 year old document.

Payment - Buyers will be sent payment instructions following their purchase. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express & PayPal. PayPal customers must have a confirmed address on file with PayPal.
