James Upshall UNSMOKED Dublin (R)/ 360 Flame Grain/Handmade, England

All James Upshall pipes are individually created by ateam of highly skilled artisans, headed by Mr. Barry Jones, who is widelyregarded as one of the best pipe carvers in the world, with more than 50years-experience in pipe making. Aficionados say that they can identify anUpshall pipe from across the room.

UNSMOKED! Here’s an exquisite Dublin shaped pipe from theBritish Marque awaiting it’s maiden voyage. With flame grain on all flanks andin the heel. It will smoke sweetly, and dryly. It houses a slightly larger thanaverage tobacco chamber. Draft hole is center and above the bottom of thechamber. There is an effortless draw. Tenon to mortise union is sound, snug andflush. Due to desirable graining, and seasoning pipe weighs only a mere 1. 56 ounces (44.1 grams) No fills. No handling marks. Pipe passes a cleaner withease.

Regarding graining, the well-respected authority on thesubject, Carl Ehwa, in his landmark book, Pipes & Tobaccos, writes:

“When selecting briar pipes, quality of wood andworkmanship and the type of graining are the prime considerations. Pipes madeof dense, straight grain wood … have atendency to absorb moisture much more slowly, which means they will smoke moresweetly and need to be rested less often. The bird\'s–eye, or end grain at thebottom of the bowl of a straight grain pipe absorbs moisture more quickly thanother grains. Yet, because of its position, it allows the moisture to drainaway from the tobacco and the channel, thus keeping the smoke dry.” ~ Pg 128
