Extremely detailed HOPI \"CHAKWAINA HEOTO MANA\" (A GREAT WARRIOR) KACHINA by SAM OMACHOVA. This is a high quality hand CARVED kachina, not one of those churned out with wood-burning tools.
The base features two longhair kachinas.
Brought to First Mesa from Zuni by the Asa, or Tansy Mustard Clan when they came to Sichomovi, and eventually adopted on the other Mesas. He perhaps represents Esteban the Moor, who led Marcos de Niza on the search for the Seven Cities of Cibola and who was reputedly killed at Zuni for some transgression. He is, however, also found in the Keresan and Tanoan pueblos along the Rio Grande, and he seems to have spread westward with the migration of the Asa Clan. He appears most often in January during the Kiva dances, and is a warrior of great repute. The personation has many relatives: Chakwaina Grandmother, Mother and Sister, and also Uncle. In recent years, kachina makers have tended to put a star on one cheek and a moon on the other. We bought this directly from Sam in 2000. 9 1/2\" high, 3 1/2\" wide. Signed on the bottom.
