The Makonde or "Wamakonde" tribe is an ethnic group situated in the southeast of Tanzania and northeast of Mozambique. Known for their excellent craftsmanship, Makonde people are mostly known for their Mapiko masks and Ujamaa (Tree of Life) carvings. The tree of life is a depiction of unity and the strength of many. This is usually portrayed as a family or an entire community featuring men, women and children in an ascending order, hand in hand and above each other. Carved by hand, each piece exhibits the intricacy of design and the power of a community. A piece like this, it takes one month to complete.
