GMP 1/6 offy Turbocharged Offenhauser race engine 168 cu. in. stand display case:
$417.99

GMP Offenhauser \"offy\" tubocharged 168 cubic inch racing engine 1:6 scale model and display. Like new in original box will require light assembly to stand, rare find. Display stand and acrylic cover. One of 250 made. Outside box has light storage wear. Originally Harry Miller designed the 151 cu. in. 4 cylinder engine for marine use but in 1930 installed it in a race car. He set a new World Speed Record of 144.895. Miller developed the engine to 220 cu. in. with 4 cylinders, double overhead cam and 4 valves per cylinder. Miller and the company who owned most of the equipmentwent bankrupt in 1933. Fred Offenhauser who was an employee bought the rights to the engine, drawings, and special tooling at the bankruptcy sale. He moved about a block down the street and with a few Miller employees including draftsman Leo Goosen took over production. One of the keys to the engines success was reliability and power. The 250 cu. in. version could develop 420 Horsepower with 15:1 compression. The engine dominated the Indy 500 with 27 wins and was king of open wheel racing in the US from 1934 to 1970\'s. Right after WW2 the designs were sold to Louis Meyer and Dale Drake and they successfully updated and refined the engine. Meyer was bought out by Drake in 1965. In the mid 1960\'s Ford entered the racing scene and the \"offy\" began to loose the domination. It remained competitiveby turbocharging that started in the 1970\'s. 168 cu. in saw outputs of over 1000. HP with 44.3 PSI.and when restricted to 24.6 could produce 770 HP. The Offy\'s final Victory came at Trenton in 1978 in Gordon Johncocks\' Wildcat. The last time an Offy powered car raced was at Pocono in 1978. Please check photos as they are part of the description and this is the engine and display you will receive. Ships FAST FREE and fully insured in US.
