IDW Publishing acquired the license to publish comics based on Hasbro's GI JOE (and Transformers) toy line in early 2008 and kicked off their relaunch of GI JOE with GI JOE #1 (Vol 1) less than a year later. The series was a complete reboot of the property, and took into account none of the previous GI JOE lore published first by Marvel and then Image / Devil's Due Press. While GI JOE was IDW's initial flagship title, it was only one of six different JOE-centric series that IDW would publish as part of their first "salvo" of GI JOE offerings.
