Early General Store Stoneware Tobacco Crock, Hand Painted Store Display Jar For Sale

Originalhand painted stoneware tobacco jar or crock for “Two Flake No. 2” tobacco with worninset portrait of a young woman. Redpainted jar measures 9.5” to the top of the lid. The overall condition is good with paintnicks and wear especially along the widest point of the jar where it was mostlikely to come into contact with other similarly shaped jars orcontainers. The gold banner and blacklettering are in very good condition while the inset portrait is heavily worn. The bottom is not marked aside from some writingin blue grease pencil. There is a chipon the base of the jar which appears to have occurred before the jar waspainted as the red paint overlaps the edge of the chip (chip is not visible whenjar is displayed). The jar is completewith its matching red-painted lid which shows extensive paint loss and surfacerust. This early jar is English inorigin and would have sat on the shelf of a tobacconist shop around 1900.
