ELEANOR ROOSEVELT FAMILY LETTERS SIGNED GRANDMÈRE FDR INAUGURATION WHITE HOUSE:
$375.00

ROOSEVELT FAMILY LETTERS:LETTER FROM ELEANOR ROOSEVELT TO HER GRANDSON, SIGNED “GRANDMÈRE” ABOUT WHAT SHE HOPES WAS THE “LAST WAR,” AND 2 WARTIME LETTERS BY HER DAUGHTER, ANNA ROOSEVELT, ON WHITE HOUSE LETTERHEAD CONCERNING F.D.R.’s DESIRE TO HAVE HIS THIRTEEN GRANDCHILDREN ATTEND HIS 1944 INAUGURATION

TYPED LETTER BY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT SIGNED “GRANDMÈRE,” TO HER GRANDSON, CURTIS [“BUZZ”], PLUS 2 LETTERS FROM DAUGHTER, ANNA ROOSEVELT ON WHITE HOUSE LETTERHEAD, CONCERNING THE GRANDCHILDREN ATTENDING FDR’S 1944 INAUGURATION. Three letters to Curtis Roosevelt. Eleanor’s letter is on her personal embossed Madison Avenue, NY letterhead (7 x 6 inches), February 21, 1946, addressed to her grandson “Buz” [i.e. Curtis Roosevelt] and concerns a German Luger pistol given to her by General McNary in Germany, to be given to Curtis, “... as a reminder of what I hope will be the last war. That, however, can only be the case if your age group learns to give as much good citizenship in peace time as the soldiers of this war gave in war time… Much love, [signed] Grandmère.”

Together with: 2 typed letters signed by Anna Roosevelt, to her son Curtis, on official White House letterheads (9 x 6.5 inches or smaller), concerning secret service and travel arrangements for Buzz to attend FDR’s 1944 inauguration. Also present is a carbon copy of her letter to Colonel Jacobson, asking for permission for Curtis’ leave from military school.

An absolutely fascinating peek into one of the most important families in American political history, including an intimate letter from Eleanor to her grandson, and 2 wartime letters from the White House, from Anna to her son Curtis, about attending FDRs 1944 inauguration.

These letters came from the estate of Curtis Roosevelt, who at the time was living in Massachusetts (more about him below). A unique opportunity to acquire personal family letters from the Roosevelts, during WWII, and the family’s time at the White House. I have more Roosevelt family letters, so please inquire if interested. The letters are in very good condition, folded for mailing. Please examine photographs to help best assess condition. Thanks.

The recipient of these letters was Curtis Roosevelt, the eldest grandson of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Born on April 19, 1930, he is the son of Anna Roosevelt and Curtis Bean Dall. His older sister is Anna Eleanor Seagraves. Curtis and his sister were popularly known as \"Sistie\" and \"Buzzie\" during their early childhoods. Curtis legally changed his last name from Dall to Roosevelt in later years.

Curtis and his sister lived in the White House from September 1933 to November 1935, then visited frequently thereafter. He was there for Christmas 1936 through FDR\'s Second Inauguration in 1937. He was also there for Christmas 1939. Curtis and his sister returned to live in the White House with their mother Anna in 1944-1945 until FDR\'s death, although Curtis was at boarding schools during this period.

In 1948, he accompanied his grandmother Eleanor Roosevelt to Paris, where Mrs.Roosevelt was attending a session of the United Nations General Assembly as a delegate from the United States.

After graduating from the Southwestern Military and Naval Academy at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Curtis attended Loyola University in Los Angeles and graduate studies at Columbia University.

He held numerous positions in advertising and education during his professional career, including vice president for public affairs for The New School of Social Research, and he was regional director of the National Citizens Council for Better Schools.

In 1964, Curtis joined the Public Information Department at the United Nations as Chief of the Non-Governmental Organizations Section. He assisted civil, labor, church and other nongovernmental groups (NGOs) interested in United Nations activities.

In more recent years, Curtis became a popular speaker and appears frequently in documentaries about his grandparents. In 2008, he wrote his memoir, Too Close to the Sun: Growing up in the Shadow of my Grandparents Franklin and Eleanor. He died in 2016.

Anna Roosevelt (1906-1975) was the eldest child and only daughter of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. She served as FDR\'s Aide-de-camp at the Yalta Conference, and assisted him as his advisor during World War II. She was an author, and worked in politics, newspapers, and radio. In 1963 JFK appointed her to the Citizens Advisory Council on the Status of Women, and for several years as vice-chairman of the President\'s Commission for the Observance of Human Rights.
