If you\'re familiar with the Captain Britain Omnibus, or the X-Men Achives 1-7 featuring Captain Britain, or the Star Wars or Dr Who reprints, then you\'ll be familiar with some of these Alan Moore stories.  But if you haven\'t seen the 1st prints of these stories, printed in B&W, in magazine-size comics, on horrible quality paper, then you haven\'t really read them.

Well, here they are!  They\'re all 40 or 52 page magazine-size comics, and the stories look completely different, and imho way better than the reprints.  The original comics are also packed full of a great mix of new material, and reprints of a lot of other classics, like John Byrne\'s run on the Avengers, and Frank Miller\'s run on Daredevil.

Just to be clear, only 45 of the 56 comics contained in this sale include work by Alan Moore, but for the sake of completeness I\'ve included Marvel Super-Heroes 377-385, 396 and 397, so you have the complete run of Captain Britain from his revamp, plus the last 2 issues of the title...

Alan Moore

These comics make up Alan Moore\'s entire output for Marvel UK from 1981-1984.  There are some absolute gems contained in this sale, which includes his 1st  published work for Marvel under the pseudonym of Curt Vile in the 1979 Frantic Winter Special (for which he also drew the artwork...), the complete run on Captain Britain, all of the Dr Who and Star Wars  stories, all of the Night Raven text stories, as well as all of the essays and articles, and all of the fanzine reviews.

They are impossible to find in 1st print form, and this is the only set up for sale online right now - they hardly ever appear on UK, let alone on in North America...

Condition & Images

These comics have been well looked after, and you probably won\'t see another complete run like this for a long time.  So get offerding, drop me a line, have a chat, and let me know your thoughts.

They\'re all 1st prints, and all the Marvel UK Captain Britain stories, and indeed pretty much all of the stories, are in black & white print.  Condition ranges from Very Fine/Near Mint (9.0) to Very Good/Fine (5.0), using Overstreet standards.

The comics have been stored in bags and boards, but they\'ve been removed for the photos of the front and back covers of the individual issues, showing the actual comics the winning buyer will receive.

Please scroll down for 24 high resolution photos of the key issues, a complete list of all the individual grades, as well as the Overstreet description of the assigned grades.  There\'s also some info about printing standards in the UK in the early 1980\'s, as well as a bit about me.

Enjoy!

Contents

And because there\'s such a wealth of material contained in these 56 comics I\'ve gone through each one making a note of the contents.  It\'s an exhaustive (and exhausting...) list, but if you want a 1st print history of Alan Moore\'s Marvel bibliography it\'s all here...

UK Comic Printing in the early 1980\'s

If you\'re not familiar with UK comics from the early 80\'s, then please be aware that the quality of the printing is very poor compared to the US Marvel comics of the day.

It\'s not unusual to see positioning marks where text blocks were photocopied, or to have printing creases, or miscut pages, or minor interior tears, or names written in ink on the cover for delivery from the newsagent.  On top of that the paper quality was poor, the comics were often exposed to outdoor weather when being delivered, and it\'s almost impossible to find interior pages without at least light browning.

On top of that, the run of The Mighty World of Marvel used heavy card stock covers for issues 7-10, and these were especially susceptible to rubbing, and general wear and tear.

Having said all that, all of the comics have been well looked after, and this really is a fantastic collection.  I just want to be sure that if you\'re not familiar with the Marvel UK comics from 30 years ago that the lower print quality involved doesn\'t come as a shock to you.

I\'ve included high res photos of as many of the key issues as I could, and I think they give a very accurate reflection of the condition of the collection.  If there\'s a particular issue, or back cover you\'d like a photo of that hasn\'t been included just let me know and I\'ll be happy to forward it to you.

And here\'s the Overstreet description of the assigned grades:

“Very Fine/Near Mint (9.0) – Nearly perfect with outstanding eye appeal.  A limited number of bindery defects are allowed.  Almost flat cover with almost imperceptible wear.  Inks are bright with slightly diminished reflectivity.  A 1/8” bend is allowed if colour is not broken.  Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases.  Several lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable.  No obvious soiling, staining or other discolouration, except for very minor foxing.  Spine is tight and flat.  No spine roll or split allowed.  Staples may show some discolouration.  Only the slightest staple tears are allowed.  A very minor accumulation of stress lines may be present if they are nearly imperceptible.  No rust migration.  In rare cases a comic was not stapled at the bindery and therefore has a missing staple; this is not considered a defect.  Any staple can be replaced on book up to Fine, but only vintage staples can be used on books from Very Fine to Near Mint.  Mint books must have original staples.  Paper is cream to off-white and supple.  No hint of acidity in the odour of the newsprint.  Centrefold is secure.  Very minor interior tears may be present.”

“Very Fine Plus (8.5) – Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book’s appearance by a perceptible amount.”

“Very Fine (8.0) - An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal.  Sharp, bright and clean with supple pages.  A comic book in this grade has the appearance of having been carefully handled.  A limited accumulation of minor bindery defects is allowed.  Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners.  Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity.  A 1/4 inch crease is acceptable if colour is not broken.  Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present.  No obvious soiling, staining or other discolouration, except for minor foxing.  Spine is almost flat with no roll.  Possible minor colour break allowed.  Staples may show some discolouration.  Very slight staple tears and a few almost very minor to minor stress lines may be present. Paper is tan to cream and supple.  No hint of acidity in the odour of the newsprint.  Centrefold is mostly secure.  Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.”

“Very Fine Minus (7.5) – Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book’s appearance by a perceptible amount.”

“Fine/Very Fine (7.0) – An above average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal.  A small accumulation of minor bindery defects is allowed.  Minor cover wear beginning to show with interior yellowing or tanning allowed, possibly including minor creases.  Corners may be blunted or abraded.  Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity.  Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present.  No obvious soiling, staining or other discolouration, except for minor foxing.  The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate colour break.  Staples may show some discolouration.  Slight staple tears and a slight accumulation of light stress lines may be present.  Slight rust migration.  In rare cases a comic was not stapled at the bindery and therefore has a missing staple; this is not considered a defect.  Any staple can be replaced on book up to Fine, but only vintage staples can be used on books from Very Fine to Near Mint.  Mint books must have original staples.  Paper is tan to cream, but not brown.  No hint of acidity in the odour of the newsprint.  Centrefold is mostly secure.  Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.”

“Fine Plus (6.5) – Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book’s appearance by a perceptible amount.”

“Fine (6.0) - An above average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects.  Eye appeal is somewhat reduced because of slight surface wear and the accumulation of small defects, especially on the spine and edges.  A Fine condition comic book appears to have been read a few times and has been handled with moderate care.  Some accumulation of minor bindery defects is allowed.  Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases.  Inks show a major reduction in reflectivity.  Blunted or abraded corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discolouration, and/or foxing.  Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present.  A minor spine roll is allowed.  There can also be a 1/4 inch spine split or severe colour break.  Staples show minor discolouration.  Minor staple tears and an accumulation of stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration.  In rare cases a comic was not stapled at the bindery and therefore has a missing staple; this is not considered a defect.  Any staple can be replaced on book up to Fine, but only vintage staples can be used on books from Very Fine to Near Mint.  Mint books must have original staples.  Paper is brown to tan and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness.  No hint of acidity in the odour of the newsprint.  Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.  Centrefold may be loose but not detached.”

“Fine Minus (5.5) – Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book’s appearance by a perceptible amount.”

“Very Good/Fine (5.0) – An above average but well-used comic book.  A comic in this grade shows some moderate wear; eye appeal is somewhat reduced because of the accumulation of defects.  Still a desirable copy that has been handled with some care.  An accumulation of bindery defects is allowed.  Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples.  Inks have major to extreme reduction in reflectivity.  Blunted or abraded corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discolouration and/or foxing.  Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present.  A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed.  A spine split of up to 1/2” may be present.  Staples may show minor discolouration.  A slight accumulation of minor staple tears and an accumulation of minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration.  In rare cases a comic was not stapled at the bindery and therefore has a missing staple; this is not considered a defect.  Any staple can be replaced on book up to Fine, but only vintage staples can be used on books from Very Fine to Near Mint.  Mint books must have original staples.  Paper is brown to tan with no signs of brittleness.  May have the faintest trace of an acidic odour.  Centrefold may be loose but not detached.  Minor tears may also be present.”

About UsI\'ve been buying and selling comics for over 30 years.

All of the sales I\'m listing are from my personal collection. They\'re either comics I\'ve upgraded, or doubles, or issues that I purchased as part of a larger lot that I don\'t collect myself. They\'ve all been stored in bags and boards in a cool, dry, smoke-free room away from sunlight.

Every single comic that I\'m listing has been carefully checked and graded by me in the last week or so. To do that I\'ve inspected each and every page, as well as the front and back cover, paying special attention to the staples, checking for cover gloss front and back, holding them up to the light to catch any hard to find creases, bends and other hard-to-spot flaws.

When I assign a grade to a comic, I\'m doing my absolute best to be accurate. I\'ll include the Overstreet description of the assigned grade, so you can be sure of what to expect. I constantly refer to the 3rd edition of the Overstreet Comic Book Grading Guide - and if you\'re not familiar with it I highly recommend it. Especially when it comes to older comics it\'s a real eye-opener...
