Up for sale is a wonderful fireplace accessory for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. This brass piece,which is no longer produced,is called the SERPENTINE FIREPLACE FENDER,style number CW102-1, is fromthe Colonial Williamsburg Collection andwas made by Virginia Metalcrafters of Waynesboro, Virginia. Fenders or “Fend-irons”were used to hold back burning embers during the 18th century. They originated in Europe and their development paralleled that of the fire grate.Early examples were made of iron. The antique of this reproduction piece wasmade in England about 1780. It features intricately piercedbrass, a scalloped edge and a graceful shape. The measurements are:

Height – 6 3/4”
Depth – 11 5/8”
Weight -17 pounds
It is stamped on the bottom of the base with the CW and VM Betty Lamp hallmark logos,the word “WILLIAMSBURG” and stylenumber 102-1.
