Charles M. Schulz, Bil Keane, and Charles Bragg draw sketches on a philatelic envelope honoring journalist Ernie Pyle
Original Art on first Day Cover Signed: \"Schulz\", \"Keane\" and \"Charles Bragg\", 6½x3½. First day cover bearing 16-cent Journalist Ernie Pyle stamp postmarked Washington, DC, May 7, 1971 FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Charles M. Schulz (1922-2000), a freelance cartoonist with \"The Saturday Evening Post\" (1948-1949), originally titled his single-panel cartoon about life\'s funny happenings \"Li\'l Folks\". It debuted as a panel strip on October 2, 1950 as \"Peanuts\", a name Schulz disliked. Each strip was personally drawn, written, inked and lettered by \"Sparky\" Schulz, who created the strips in his office at One Snoopy Place and drank coffee at the Warm Puppy snack Bar. He died on February 12, 2000, the evening before his last \"Peanuts\" strip appeared in the Sunday editions of newspapers. Before Schulz\'s death, the strip was reproduced in a number of popular books, and his loveable characters were also seen on television and in feature films as well as on a wide variety of licensed \"Peanuts\" products. Schulz\' award-winning work - he was Cartoonist of the Year in 1955 and again in 1965 - is still syndicated as \"Classic Peanuts\". Cartoonist Bil Keane (1922-2011) debuted his first \"Family Circus\" cartoon, based on Keane\'s own family, in February 1960. The strip, which was originally called \"The Family Circle\", still uses circles around the characters to denote their closeness. The comic strip is distributed to over 1500 newspapers by The King Features Syndicate, making it the most widely syndicated panel in the U.S., and the \"Family Circus\" characters have appeared in TV holiday specials and in paperback book compilations (some 14 million in print). Keane, who was named Cartoonist of the Year in 1983, has passed his legacy along to his family. His son Glen, a leading animator at Disney, created the starring characters Ariel (The Little Mermaid), the Beast (Beauty and the Beast), Pocahontas and Tarzan. Painter, sculptor and author Charles Bragg (b. 1931) has been called America\'s \"foremost social satire artist.\" Widely exhibited in museums and galleries, Bragg\'s art has been commissioned by Playboy and documented in a PBS program. He won a Gold Medal from the National Society of Illustrators and an Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York. Fine condition.
