A very unusual antique Royal Doulton stoneware tavern toasting pitcher.
Circa 1902-1922 (based on the back stamp pictured below), this large and oddly-shaped Series ware jug is vividly colourful and bears the motto BETTER LATE THAN NEVER.
Standing approximately 9 1/2" tall and nearly 20" around the lower base of the body, this ewer is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, crazing, areas of paint wear, or repairs. There are several interior scratches at the bottom, presumably from use.
I can find no other example of this Doulton mold, nor is there a series ware stamp on the bottom (ie D1234) so I can't date it more specifically. If you can provide additional information I would love to hear from you.
