Terrific Seth Thomas Model 298A8 Day Mantel Clock w/Original Labels!\"New York College Series\"Great Arts & Craft Look & PatinaRunning Well, with Wind Key30 Minute & Hour Chimes!Approx: 23.25\" H x 15\" W x 4.75\" D7.75 lbs,Circa 1907
Super Seth Thomas Mantel or Kitchen or Parlor Clock. It was one of the clocks made in the New York College Series that ran from late 1800\'s to early 1900\'s. It has an awesome Arts & Crafts look. Some call this style Gingerbread as well. Great for any antiqued room, bed & breakfast, farm home, etc. Kind of rare to find with pretty good labels in tact. The one on the back has instructions, Model # 298A and advertises the Seth Thomas railroad watches. The date stamp on back is faded but indicates it was made in 1907. It has a look of an even older clock. Seth Thomas Co would list dates backwards on many clocks and with a letter indicating a month in this case A7091 or 1907 A for January (B would be February, C for March, etc). We moistened the area of date to enhance it, it shows much lighter when it is dry.
We tested the clock for over a week and it ran well the entire time and kept decent time, but we did not want to over use it. There is a screw on the bottom of pendulum that you can move up or down to increase or decrease speed. It also chimed on time. It chimes once on the 1/2 hour and then the number for the time of day.
Of course when you get it, you will have to set to the proper time. Cautionary note, the instructions state that you never adjust the time by using the hour hand, only the minute hand. Wehighly recommendthe new owner ask a clock service person about basic instructions for operating these clocks or watching some videos if you are not an expert or at least have knowledge of these old clocks. These are pretty easy to maintain once you know basics. The main thing you never want to do is over wind the clock for obvious reasons. We did not have it serviced and only gently whipped off the dust and some tarnish off the pendulum. The pendulum has some tarnish remaining on it, but some people like the antique look, so we did not remove all of the remaining tarnish. For 111 years old this clock runs very well, just handle with care.
The clock has a great deal of patina and some wear from age to wood exterior. There may be a few spots of paint as well, but they are small. We see no defects beyond general wear as pictured. The face glass on door is nice as is the paint design on door interior. The paper clock face has some staining and wear as shown in pictures as these were really the most vulnerable parts of these clocks, but it is original. Please look over all pictures taken and use zoom if needed. Let us know if you have other questions. We also encourage you to read up on the Seth Thomas clock company history if you are new to this, great read.
We ship quickly and with great care. We will pack pendulum and key with wrap to protect them. The clock will be heavily bubble wrapped and then put in a Styrofoam lined box. And of course, it will be fully insured. Sales Tax (7%) is for Indiana residents only.
