My Grandfather was an early employee of TWA Airlines who travelled the globe time and again for decades. This whimsical carving was among his prized estate possessions.
It appears to be an antique garamut or slit drum or slit gong.It is made from a hollowed-out log and played by striking it with a stick. Men of Africa, of Oceania, and beyond, would play it at sacred ceremonies, communal celebrations, and dances. This lovingly hand carved fellow appears to be a musical instrument in the shape of a primate. The primitive tones he produces when I tap the attached stick to the sides is incredible. Just bone deep and heart stopping, the sounds it makes.
He is in incredible condition. He has a patina and overall light age wear that only ads to his beauty. There is a crack along his ear which I believe is part of the natural grain of the wood. The hand woven rope is intact and strong. A hand fashioned piece of metal attaches the stick to the rope.
He measures 26.5\" tall x 4.5\" around. He weighs 7.5 pounds.
You will be charmed and pleased I\'m sure to have this gent in your presence.
Thanks for your interest and best of luck offerding !!

DISCLAIMER: I\'m not an expert on the majority of my listings. I do my best to research each item, to report on it truthfully and honestly, and to determine its working condition if applicable, but errors do occur.
