Antique Mettlach Villeroy/Boch Etched Beer Stein #2888 Travelling Friends c.1907

Description: This beautiful stein was produced by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach over 100 years ago. The exceptionally crafted etched technique decoration shows a picture of a three friends joyfully marching on a country road. The inscription on the bottom is the lyrics of a popular song at the time:

“Sorglos wie’s Gewölk am Himmel ziehn die Wanderburschen fort.
Trank und Speise wird erfochten bei dem Zug durch jeden Ort.”
(Carefree as the clouds in the sky the traveling journeymen keep wandering.
Drink and food they manage to acquire when going through each town.)

The design of the stein was made by the artist who signed "MC". I was not able to find out who exactly this artist was but he seems to create artwork for several steins including 2886, 2887, and 2889 - and also 2833A, 2833B, C, and D - these are from the same series that illustrates most popular songs of the time.

The young men on the picture are portrayed with many details - you can notice the clothing details, facial impressions, etc. In fact, there are very few Mettlach pieces that show a contemporary subject without caricature.

The stein is fully marked at the bottom with Mettlach tower mark, mold number 2888 control number 34, and 07 for the year of production of 1907.

The stein is the perfect flawless condition. The lid shows some minor dings and scratches. Please note - this is the original lid, all Mettlach steins came with a choice of either a full pewter lid or a lid pewter mounts and ceramics inlay. The pewter lids were actually more expensive.

The stein is 8" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5 L capacity

Reference#: Condition: Excellent body, minor scratches on lid Year: c.1907 Country: Germany Maker: Mettlach Height: 8 in Materials: Stoneware
