Antique Mettlach V&B Beer Stein Etched Drunk Landskecht #1796 by C.Worth c.1885

Description: This gorgeous stein was made by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach in 1885. It is made in etched technique, with the relief enamel creating a wonderful effect.

The stein was designed by Christian Worth - the most famous Mettlach artist and designer who created many beautiful Mettlach pieces. The decorations created by the artist show a visibly intoxicated man in the clothes that usually associated with Landsknechts - the mercenary warriors of the 1500s. The landsknecht is trying to make some dance moves while sitting on a bench with a large pitcher in one hand and a beer stein in another. The side pictures show a monkey that in German drinking culture was associated with drunkenness, and a cat, associated with hangover.

The lid is pewter with a ceramic inlay showing a plate with herring - a good beer snack. The thumblift is made in the form of a gnome drinking from the beer stein.

The stein is fully marked on the bottom with incised Mettlach tower mark, mold number 1796 and \"87\" for the date of manufacturing 1887.

The stein is in excellent condition with no lines, cracks or chips and only with some minor discoloration on the inside.

This is a nice and impressive stein, with history and tradition behind it.

It is 8.25\" tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5 L capacity.

Reference#:   Condition: Excellent w/minor discoloration on the inside Year: c.1887 Country: Germany Maker: Mettlach Height: 8.25 in Materials: Stoneware
