This is a wonderful and rare table-top sculpture of the renowned naturalist, John Burroughs. It was modeled at his home, Woodchuck Lodge in the Catskills, in 1915 by Cartaino Di Scannino Pietro. Several wealthy individuals, including Henry Ford, commissioned Pietro to create statues of Burroughs. I\'ve found 4 that are table-top size: mine of him seated; 2 busts (one has head looking forward, don\'t know if it ever was cast; the other, head tilted down); Burroughs standing. There also is a life-sized statue of him seated on a big rock, shading his eyes with his left arm. The statue is located in the Welles Sculpture Garden at the Toledo Museum of Art.
I\'ve included images of each. Pietro immigrated from Italy at the age of 22 and soon was sculpting busts of society figures such as Henry Ford, Enrico Caruso, Pres. William Taft, J P Morgan, the Vanderbilts, John Muir. He died in the Great Influenza Epidemic of 1918, aged 32.Cast in bronze by Roman Bronze Works and properly signed. It is hollow.
Condition is excellent. No damage to the bronze that I can find. Finish has aged to a lovely bronze patina with touches of verdigris in places, just as you find moss or lichen in the crevices of such a rocky outcropping.
14 1/2 inches tall; base is 11 inches the long way, 10 inches the other way. Weighs just shy of 19 pounds.
