Antique Gaudy Welsh
Semi China Handless Cup and Saucer Set
Grape Pattern
Made in England

For Your China Cup & Saucer or Gaudy Welsh Pottery This is an antique Semi China cup and saucer set. This set of Gaudy Welsh China is in the rare Grape Pattern. It has a very colorful design with beautiful cobalt blue, pink, orange and green. It also has gold-colored highlights and gold all along the rim of the cup and saucer. The set was made by E Wood & Sons of Burslem in Staffordshire England and the bottom of the saucer is impressed with the E wood mark consisting of an eagle in the center of a circle and the words E.WOOD BURSLEM WARRANTED surrounding the eagle and the words SEMI CHINA above its head (see page 105in John A. Shuman III book \"The Collector\'s Encyclopedia of Gaudy Dutch & Welsh\" published by Collector Books, Paducah KY 1998). This Staffordshire Semi China set is just beautiful and consists a round deep saucer and a round cup with flared sides and a round outwards extended base. A great set of a rare design to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

  • Date: Uncertain, but most likely sometime between 1818 and 1846 (the period the E Wood & Sons company existed).
  • Origin: Burslem, Staffordshire, England
  • Size: Saucer: ~5 3/4\" in diameter and ~1 1/8\" high; The cup: ~1 7/8\" diameter at the base, ~3 1/2\" diameter at the top and is ~2 3/8\" high; The pair weigh a bit over 8.5 ounces.
  • Maker: Enoch Wood & Sons pottery.
  • Marks: The saucer is impressed with the E Wood mark consisting of an eagle in the center of a circle and the words E.WOOD BURSLEM WARRANTED surrounding the eagle and the words SEMI CHINA above its head (see page 105in John A. Shuman III book \"The Collector\'s Encyclopedia of Gaudy Dutch & Welsh\" published by Collector Books, Paducah KY 1998). The cup has what looks like the number 5 impressed into its bottom and a cobalt blue mark that looks like the silhouette of a bird flying.
  • Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Very nice antique China cup and saucer with a beautiful and rather rare design having bold and fresh colors. This would make a great addition to your collection of cups and saucers, Gaudy Welsh pottery collection, or Staffordshire pottery collection.
  • Condition: Cup and saucer are in very good condition with no cracks, hairlines, repairs, chips, or crazing to the glaze. The colors are fresh and bold. The design shows some loss of coloration especially along the rim of both the cup and saucer. There are also pops in the paint throughout and surface defects, which are common in this type of pottery, such as slubs, uneven spots and some inclusions into the China, which are original to the making. Be that as it may, this is a beautiful set that is hard to come by in such good condition and is worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos to appreciate the beauty of this set and for additional condition information.
