What an incredible example of not only a sampler but folk art. Ive never seen a piece created in this fashion. Needlepoint embroidery on a large piece of fabric and then some areas are hand painted in! Makes for a very interesting and rare piece of art. And the subject matter of a military steamship adorned with flags and a title USS Maine.
The USS Maine has a storied history and its sinking was a contributing factor to the Spanish American war and the battle cry "Remember the Maine to Hell with Spain" Sadly upon loss of this marvel of engineering many lives of service heros were lost as well. Her flag is now on display at the Arlington National Cemetery.

Very rare form of folk art and a wonderful piece of history.

Has two holes i imagine from nails please study images carefully. Additional images available if interested. Discoloration of fabric and frame is heavily worn but likely original.
