Upfor sale is a hard to find ARCADE No. 777,IXL circa 1880’s. The Dimensions are 7 ½” X 7 ½” X 11\". This is alarge box mill, on the very top it reads IXLwith ARCADE MFG CO. FREEPORT, ILL onthe domed portion of the mill. (There has been discussion as to what the IXLstands for and it is conjecture that it was a marketing phrase where IXL stands for “I Excel” when you say the letters out loud.) TheARCADE Manufacturing Company was out of Freeport, Illinois. Reference to thiscompany and grinders it produced can be found in the MacMillan Index of AntiqueCoffee Mills, Pg 51.
Thelabel is a replacement label that reads “Home Coffee Mill, No. 777. Patented June 6th, 1894 HOLDS APOUND OF COFFEE – GRINDS EASY AND FAST, MANUFACTURED BY ARCADE MANFG. CO. The mill is complete and functional. There is a crack in the wood on the crankside with a smaller split about an inch above it. The piece is solid, and the dovetailed jointsare tight.
Anantique oil restorer has been applied to both the metal and wood, that providesa rich, warm patina and helps inhibit rust on the metal pieces.
Thismill is typically hard to find especially in this condition, it would be agreat addition to any antique collection or display piece in a kitchen. Pleasesee my other coffee grinders and coffee related items on this week.
