Antique Clock - Seth Thomas "Empire No. 9" Brass c. 1908, with key (non-working):
$855.00

This is an antique French-style SETH THOMAS Empire brass crystal regulator mantel (mantle) clock . This model is an "Empire No. 9" dating back to c. 1908. The movement is inscribed with the Seth Thomas logo "ST", "USA", and the movement identifier "48N". It's an 8-day time and strike clock that strikes the time on the hour and one strike on the half-hour. Winding key is included. It has two doors, front and back. All 4-glass sides are beveled glass in good condition. The sides of the right and left beveled glass panes are held by vertical grooves in the brass case. The bottoms of the right and left beveled glass panes were held in place by strips of U-shaped brass came. I have those two glass panes wrapped separately, with the two pieces of brass came, to avoid risk of damage. The pendulum is believed to be an original mercury pendulum. I've seen these mercury pendulums on for as much as $150 just for the pendulum. The pendulum will be unhooked and packed for shipment. After you unpack the clock, you'll need to hook the pendulum onto the movement and insert the side glass panels.
The clock has three arbors: strike (left side), time (right side), and S/F (top, at 12:00). The strike and time arbors should be wound counter-clockwise. When adjusting the time, only turn the minute hand. Do not turn the hour hand. The minute hand should be turned clockwise, and as you approach 12:00 and 6:00, you should let the clock complete striking before turning the minute hand any further.
The clock was running and striking when I first listed this clock. Then, the situation changed (probably from my sliding the clock on the counter that it sits on) and the clock would not stop striking. Now, the clock isn't running due to the pallet not engaging the escapement to move that gear. I believe it would be a minor adjustment, and not a cleaning, to get the clock working. Cosmetically, it's in excellent condition.
Note: "Came" is a slender, grooved bar of brass for holding together the pieces of glass in windows of latticework or stained glass. I am including the two pieces that I have, for the bottom of the side glass. No soldering is needed - just fit the edge of the glass into the brass. The sides of the glass fit into vertical grooves in the corner pillars. Two pictures illustrate how the glass fits into the came. Additional brass came can be found on or in a stained glass supply store or Amazon (search for "stained glass brass came").
Dimensions: 12" H x 8" W x 5.5" D. Weight: About 14.5 lbs.
This is really an impressive clock from my father's antique clock collection. As a hobbyist, he collected, repaired, and serviced antique clocks.
