19thCentury Sailor’s Rigging Knife on Tall Ships

Civil War Era--Spanish American War Era

c.1860—1890

This original, mid-19th century, sailor\'s rigging knife is in good condition with no repairs. The leather handles and iron blade have a smooth, dark patina from age and use.

This knife is Guaranteed to be original and authentic. It dates from about the Civil War era to 1898.

The blade and leather grips are in \"as found\" condition\" and have not been cleaned.

This knife measures about 8.5\" long, while the blade is about 4.5\" long. Originally purchased from an old naval collection in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The well-used sailor\'s knife measures has a very thick blade that measures .3\" (7.5 mm) thick and would have made it almost impossible to break even under the most demanding use.

The knife has 3 rivets that hold the thick, leather hand grips onto the solid steel tang of the thick blade. The knife\'s edge is still VERY SHARP, while the top edge of the blade shows signs that it was repeatedly struck with a hammer like tool that has partially flattened the top edge of the blade. {Please see macro photos.}

The tip of the blade is cut on an angle, which was common for rigging knives in the 18th and 19th centuries, as a sharp point could accidentally stab its owner when he bent over or was climbing up top in the rigging.

As this was an essential tool for any sailor, one can only imagine the tales this knife could tell it could talk. It certainly has seen LOTS of use and wear on the high seas and in the docks. It would look SUPER in any maritime collection.
