The life of Abigail is told in the 1st book of Samuel (chapter 25) 1.
Abigail lived in Maon. Her husband, Nabal, was a wealthy sheep and goat farmer. During the mowing, David and his men had watched over Nabal's lands and had protected his flocks. David sent his messengers to him. But Nabal gave them this answer2:
“Who is David? Who is Ichai's son? There are many slaves today who escape from their masters! "
"I will go and take my bread, my water, the meat that I killed for my shearers, and give everything to people who come from who knows where!" "
David took umbrage at the ingratitude expressed by Nabal. Nabal's wife, Abigail was informed of the incident and in order to prevent David from thinking of revenge and ruin falling on her husband and his property, Abigail, without informing her husband, went to David. with food for David and his men. She urged him3:
“My lord will take no notice of that rascal of Nabal; he is what his name indicates: Nabal, Fou; and it is. "...
“It was the Lord who prevented you from shedding blood and avenging yourself at your hand. "
Accept therefore the present which your servant brings to my lord; that it be distributed to people in your suite ... "
Then she reminded him that God will assure him a long descendants4.
American theologian Jon D. Levenson identified this act as an “undeniable foreshadowing” of Nathan's prophecy in the Second Book of Samuel- chapter 75,6. Alice Bach, professor of religious studies, points out that Abigail formulated a crucial prophecy. The Talmud considers Abigail to be one of the seven female prophets of Tanakh8. However, Jon D. Levenson suggests that Abigail "detects the drift of history" and that its formulation is due to his intelligence rather than being a special revelation5.
The next morning, Abigail told the whole story to Nabal9. About ten days later, “Nabal, struck by the Lord, died” 10.
When he heard the news, David returned to Maon and married Abigail11.
Prudente Abigail by Juan Antonio Escalante
The first book of Samuel describes Abigail as “intelligent and beautiful” 12. The Tanakh reports the same terms. The Talmud amplifies this image by mentioning her as one of the “four women in the world who are superior in beauty” 13.
Regarding his moral qualities, the theologian Abraham Kuyper, describes Abigail as "a very attractive character and possessing an unshakeable faith" 14. Alice Bach considers her to be subversive15.
Theologian Jon D. Levenson argues that Abigail could be the same person as Abigail, mother of Amasa, 16 although Richard M. Davidson points out that “based on the final form of the Old Testament, the references to Abigail in the texts of the Bible indicate two different people The prudent Abigail - Luca Giordano - 1696-1697 (Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid)
