Antique 1920 x2 RUSSIAN DOLLS Pre-Soviet Union Cloth STOCKINETTE Village Women For Sale

This is a pair of wonderful antique handmade stockinette cloth dolls. one made by Russian folk artists inmade in Russia around the time of the Revolution of 1917.The faces are traditionally silk stockinette fabric with details hand-painted, fingers molded together and the doll is a standing figure. Traditional regional fabrics were used to make these costumes and the feet were encased in lapti, the woven bast shoes worn by peasants. For textile collectors these are rare examples of bits of Soviet fabric design from that era. Thank you for looking.
Condition: Both are on great excellent condition and over 100 tears old. The clothing has some dust, fading and darkening in spots. See photos. There are no rips, tears or holes.

The lovely “Ryasan District Woman” was made in Russia around the time of the Revolution of 1917, Pre-Soviet Union era 1922.. Her pressed linen, needle sculpted face, painted with an open, smiling mouth, dimples and side glancing eyes is beautiful! Her hands and legs are linen as well, with woven grass shoes. Her costume that is my favorite part ~ several layers of cotton prints, layered in a marvelous rhythm of patterns and colors. Her gauze slip and blouse are printed with stripes and diamonds, against the 3 different fabrics of the skirt, smock and head scarf. Under her smock is a deep colored stripe skirt with black polished cotton border and red cotton front panel. There is slight fading of the colors and a patina of dust - all commensurate with her age. The label stitched to her slip is hard to read after the “made in Russia”, but I believe it should say “Ryasan District Woman” in the broken type. She measures 14.5 inches tall and has a warm and friendly stature.~The second doll is from same period and lovely"Mordwa Woman" isfine example of the regions costume, on a delightful character stockinette andclothShe wears lapti on her feet, still in quite good condition. These are the bast shoe,worn by peasants in certain regions of what was the former Soviet Union. Theseshoes are still made today & much folklore revolves around them, from songs toproverbs & idioms. Seeing them in a dream foretells an interesting & long journey.

The Mordwa peoples are thought to be one of the larger indigenous groups within
Russia today & identify themselves as separate ethnic groups. Their origins
and history is an interesting read in genetic drift and geo-politics.
