Antique 1800s Large Heavy Copper Pan 16” Iron Handle Primitive Rustic Farmhouse:
$85.00

Fabulous primitive very large and heavy 25”-long antique hand-crafted copper pan with a 12.5” diameter and a depth of 3.75”. This hand-hammered copper pan has incised detailing and a 16”-long hand-forged iron handle with a rounded and stretched slender strap, a unique rectangular central anchoring rivet, and a small side-tail (rat tail) hook. The handle is angled but the pot still sits flat. The pan has a brilliant rich copper patina with an incredible amount of incised detailing around the sides and across the bottom. The handle has rivets that are obviously hand-forged and hand-hammered, yet the stretched and rounded strap attached across the handle, which adds two more rivets flared out to the sides for stability, has a more wrought-iron quality. That means whoever created this pan knew both forging and wrought iron smithing techniques, which implies the pan was made during the transitional period of 1800-1850. It is intriguing why the creator, who was obviously skilled and took so much time with the details on the copper, made the baseplate and the rivets irregular and piece-make—-though one of the additional hallmarks of antique copper pans IS irregularity of the ironwork. Based on all the above-mentioned factors, along with weight, condition, style and handle, I believe this pan to be from the early to mid-1800s, but I am not an expert and can only say what I have learned over the years. There are no maker’s marks, and so I have no way of knowing the country of origin. There are at least two signs of previous repair of the copper on either side of the handle, a dent on the right side near the handle, and a faint rectangle of sticker residue on the right side that I did not remove because I didn’t want to ruin the rich copper patina. Because of the age of this pan there are the expected variations in patina; some minor scratches, dents, and dings here and there; some rust on the handles; areas of pitting in the base of the pan; and other signs of age and wear, which are all well represented in the pictures. Please examine all pictures closely in order to fully assess for yourself the condition of this copper pan. Measurements are: total length 25.25”/64cm, length of handle 14.25”/36cm, diameter 12.5”/31.75cm, depth 3.75”/9.5cm, width of handle at widest point 1.25”/3cm, thickness of handle 0.125”/0.3cm, weight 3lbs. This large antique copper and iron pan would be a stunning centerpiece in any decorative display of old copper!
