Beautiful kidney shaped Tukula box from the KUBA tribe from D.R. Congo, finely decorated with tribal motifs.
These kind of boxes were used for the storage of tukula, a red powder made from the bark of a tree. This powder was used in order to color the body, face and hair during ritual dances. Therefore the inside of the box has a red color.
