ONE OF A KIND. Exceptional, massive, luxurious, ornate and fabulous palatial bronze tray profusely decorated made for nobility. In more than 20 years of selling antiques, this is one of most extraordinary pieces I have owned (top five). It is simply impossible to find a bronze tray whose beauty, artistic elaboration, sophistication, exquisiteness and splendor surpasses this tray. According to the experts i contacted, this tray has been made for the French nobility during XVIII century and can be considered a mythical artwork inspired by a fascinating Medusa version. This impressive and sublime French artwork is of remarkable quality, and it does not use the embossing technique, but the openwork technique. The profuse and intricate central figures (the face, scaled chimeras as gargoyles or fantastic snakes, flowers, and leaves) were cast from massive and solid bronze with slight silver plated accents, and placed on a rectangular bronze plate. This feature makes all these amazing images emerge completely delineated and defined, with an incredibly sculptural aspect and an infinity of variations in the surface of the relief. A thin frame with a pattern of tiny spheres aligned on the inside and with four larger spheres that protrude at each of its corners (in order to place a flat crystal plate that allows it to be used as a tray), separates the central scene from the wide curved frame of the tray, also made with the same technique as the central scene (openwork in solid bronze with slight silver accents) but without any bronze plate behind. This means that behind this decorated curved frame of flowers and leaves, the surface of the table on which the tray rests can be seen (see first picture - you can see the orange and black background of the surface behind the tray -). Lastly, the edge of the tray ends with a thin frame with two curved bronze handles protruding from its sides and decorated with multiple concentric rings. These handles have in their center a large rounded ring with artistic designs and spheres(also openwork technique). The four legs on which the tray stands are styled and designed to match the style and design of the handles. Thanks to the height of these legs, the tray can be lifted and stood on two of them (slightly inclined), so the tray can be displayed as a painting. For everything described, this massive bronze tray (very heavy considering its size), has a magnificence and splendor that I have never seen in a bronze tray. A really exceptional and aristocratic tray for demanding collectors.
