Description Here is a very nice lot of 9 vintage CIGARETTE TOBACCO SILKS. Featuring BIRDS & BUTTERFLIES.
There are 3 SILKS from ZIRA Cigarettes, Factory No. 7, 5th District N.J. ; 4 SILKS from TOKIO Cigarettes, factory No. 649, First Dist N.Y.; 1 SILK from Piedmont Cigarettes, Factory No. 42, Fourth Dist. N.C. and the last does not have the brand but comes from Factory No. 649, First Dist. N.Y., SO I would say this is also a TOKIO brand.
The SILKS feature (3) BIRDS, one is a Scarlet-Head Manakin, a Blue Cotinga, along with another blue & red bird, 4th in the right hand row. Then there are (6) BUTTERFLIES and or MOTHS. These SILKS do not state the species.
The vintage CIGARETTE SILKS are in very good condition, strong colors, great details, smoke free home, there is the usual fraying at ends, nothing major. Please look over all of the photos for more information.
A little history.
Around the 1900's, tobacco companies created cigarettes and packaged them with silk premiums to lure women to become smokers. Advertisers would suggest that the Silks be used to make items for decorating in the homes. Silks were the fad between 1910 and 1916, more or less the practice was abandoned at the start of World War l. Payment
